The term ‘superintelligence’ refers to an artificially intelligent system that surpasses human capabilities in all areas. This definition has primarily been associated with science fiction ideas and has only been discussed in English-speaking countries since 1965. In China, the term ‘superintelligence’ is rarely used. Instead, the more scientifically common term ‘artificial general intelligence’ (AGI) is used rather than ‘artificial superintelligence’ (ASI). Overall, however, all these terms represent a vision of technical development whose implementation is unclear. The term became popular in June 2025, when it was announced that Instagram’s parent company, Meta, was establishing an ASI laboratory staffed by AI experts and funded with millions of dollars.
